COVID-19 SOE Ends

New York’s COVID-19 state of emergency declaration is over after Gov. Kathy Hochul let the executive powers expire on Monday. According to the Times Union the declaration put in place by her predecessor in June of 2021 was being renewed month-to-month. Last week New York lifted mask mandates on public transportation.

Schenevus Mas Arrested For Catalytic Converter Theft

A man from Schenevus is charged in a a spree of catalytic converter thefts. A State Police investigation determined the man cut off catalytic converters from vehicles at locations in Maryland, Worcester and Milford. He is charged with multiple felonies including grand larceny, criminal mischief, criminal possession of stolen property and auto stripping.

Oxford Store Sells Take 5 Winning Ticket

An Oxford convenience store sells a winning New York Lottery Take 5 winning ticket. It was for the Sept. 8 Take 5 midday drawing and is worth nearly $9,700. Check numbers at nylottery.ny.gov Winners have up to a year to claim prizes.

Schoharie County Looking Into Converting Old Jail To Homeless Shelter

Schoharie County lawmakers are looking into converting an old jail into a homeless shelter. According to the Times-Journal the county spends about $1 million annually to care for the homeless. The county social services department is seeking proposals from consultants to appraise the jail site and offer a best-use analysis.

Volunteers Clean Up Oneonta Triangle

SUNY Oneonta and Hartwick College students partner with community volunteers to improve the appearance at the “triangle” at the corner of Main Street and Lettis Highway. Mayor Mark Drnek praised Wendy Slicer who applied for funding from the Oneonta Community Inititiative for mums, gloves and tools.

Dogs Seized From Maryland Home

7 German Shepherd dogs were seized last week at a Town of Maryland home. Otsego County Sheriff Richard Devlin is currently fostering-adopting one of the dogs which he says has a long road of recovery ahead. The remaining 6 German Shepherds are at the Susquehanna SPCA and need forever homes.

DiNapoli Dings Milford CSD

An audit of the Milford Central School District by State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli’s office found that officials did not properly manage its fund balance. The District’s Surplus fund balance exceeded the 4% statutory limit by 5.4%. The district also failed to develop and adopt a written multiyear financial plan or fund balance policy.

New York State Civic Leadership Program Created

It’s Welcoming Week in New York and the state is commemorating it by launching the New York State Civic Leadership Program. It strengthens the civic leadership of new Americans across the state and connects them to local government, institutions, and their neighbors. Community-based organizations will be implementing the program.

Gas Tax Suspension Extended

Governor Kathy Hochul extends the suspension of certain taxes on Gasoline & Diesel Fuel through December 31. The suspension was implemented back on June 1 as fuel prices skyrocketed. It removes the state sales tax of at least $0.16 per gallon. Local sales and use taxes are not suspended.
