The owners of the Great American store in Sidney announce they are closing up after 60 years in business. According to a social media post the owners say the everchanging landscape of the grocery business and competition from corporate giants and online sales led to this decision.

SUNY Oneonta Marks Hunt Union 50th Anniversary

SUNY Oneonta Student Life & Leadership invites the campus community to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the College Union on Thursday at 2:00 p.m. The event in the Waterfront Room will include history and reflections from alumni and campus leadership while attendees enjoy food and cake.

Spring Brook School Celebrates 10th Anniversary

The Spring Brook residential school in Oneonta celebrates its 10th anniversary this week. In 2012, the school opened its doors to 24 students on the autism spectrum and has served over 1,000 students and families. The school will hold a parade and other events on Thursday.

SNAP Recipients To Get Additional Food Assistance

Those enrolled in the state’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program will receive the maximum allowable level of food benefits for October. Households already receiving the maximum monthly benefit, and those that had been receiving an emergency allotment will receive a supplemental payment of at least $95.

Glimmerglass Film Days Tickets On Sale

Ticksts are on sale for Glimmerglass Film Days taking place November 10-14. The event features the signature combination of compelling independent films, filmmaker talks, art, books, parties with local food and drink, guided walks, and collaborations with local museums, nonprofits, restaurants, and businesses. A selection of festival films will also be available virtually November 18-20.

Otsego County SO Participating In National Drug Take Back Day

The Otsego County Sheriff’s Office will be accepting expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs at its semi-annual drug take back event on Oct. 29. Medications will be accepted between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. at no charge with no questions asked. Prohibited items include sharps, needles, liquids, aerosols, and ointments.

Pedestrian Killed In Oneonta Accident

A pedestrian died after being hit by a driver on James F. Lettis Highway in Oneonta on Friday. Police say they found the individual identified as Dale Clark on the roadway. He died at the scene. There’s been no word on if charges will be filed against the driver.

State Police Searching For Missing Man

State Police are searching for a missing kayaker around Canadarago Lake just south of Richfield Springs. Troopers were called to the lake early Saturday afternoon when a kayak and other items were found unoccupied. Residents are advised to be aware of an increased law enforcement presence near the lake.

DEC Encourages New Yorkers to Help Protect Bats During ‘Bat Week’

This is the internationally recognized observance of Bat Week and the Department of Environmental Conservation encourages outdoor enthusiasts to refrain from visiting caves and mines during the fall and winter months. Bats hibernate in these underground cavities where relatively constant, warm temperatures protect them from harsh outside winter temperatures above ground.
