New York has 3 new laws expanding financial assistance and protections for victims and survivors of crime who have not been physically injured. The laws now allow victims and survivors of interpersonal violence to use additional documents and information to prove identity theft before debt collection can occur.
A new law allows those over the age of 18 to apply for ‘one-day designation,’ authorizing them to solemnize a single marriage on a specified day. It amends the domestic relations law to enable individuals to apply for permission to be designated as an officiant.
A man from Hamden is charged with menacing from a Delaware County Sheriff’s investigation. Deputies determined he pushed the victim from behind, displayed an axe while verbally threatening to cause harm and then cut off the victim’s electrical supply. He was booked then released pending a future court date.
The Schenevus Central School District will start the new year off with a search for a new supervisor after Theresa Carlin tendered her resignation effective Dec. 31. Carlin became superintendent in 2018. It’s not clear irf Carlin accepted another opportunity.
New laws are enacted to crack down on pandemic fraud. It increases the award amounts given to individuals who report fraud related to a State of Emergency. Whistleblowers may be eligible to receive additional money if the fraud was perpetrated during a state of emergency.
A man from Hamden is charged with animal cruelty resulting from a DFelaware County Sheriff’s investigation. Deputies found numerous animals were not being cared for, including a lack of water, food, and proper shelter. The owner was booked then released pending a future court date.
State Police conducted an underage drinking detail in Otsego County and of the 14 businesses checked all were in compliance. Establishments are checked using a trooper in plain clothes and one or more underaged operatives who cannot lie about their age.
Applications are now accepted for the 2023 Excelsior Scholarship. It allows eligible full-time students to attend a SUNY or CUNY two-year or four-year school. Maximum household income is $125,000 and there are other requirements. Visit esc.ny.gov for details.
The Chenango County Health Department reports a lauge increase in flu cases. There’s been nearly 825 cases so far compared to around 570 in 2020. Officials encourage everyone 6 months and older to receive the flu vaccine as the season usually peaks in January.
The Oneonta Department of Public Works responded to a water main break Tuesday afternoon at the corner of Chestnut Street and Lewis Ave. There may be a temporary water outage until repairs are completed. Please obey all temporary traffic control devices.
