The Greater Norwich Foundation is awarding the John M. Endries Scholarship for the first time in 2023. According to the Evening Sun this will be a $2,000 scholarship awarded annually to a worthy, solid student with a financial need as determined by the Foundation’s scholarship committee and the school together.
Hartwick College’s Baker-Simpson Entrepreneurial Leadership Program is back after a three-year hiatus. It allows students to explore their aspirations in and around social entrepreneurship, innovation and social impact. Program participants identify organizations to work with that have a social impact that align with their values and interests.
The State Department of Transportation is asking drivers to don’t “crowd the plow” and maintain a safe distance when driving behind snow plows. The recommended distance is four vehicles. Snow plows drive 35 mph even on interstates. Officials warn drivers to stay out of a plow driver’s blind spots.
The American Lung Association released its annual State of Tobacco Control Report and while New York earned an A grade for “Strength of Smokefree Workplace Laws” it received an F for “Funding for State Tobacco Prevention Programs”. The study evaluates how governments help prevent people from picking up the tobacco habit or continuing.
Traffic was snarled on I-88 eastbound Wednesday morning when at ractor-trailer and a pickup truck collided near Exit 15. The pickup’s driver was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. The roadway was closed for the accident investigation and to remove the vehicles.
A man from Davenport facing child sexual assault charges takes a plea deal. Prosecutors say Jeremie G. Hoyt pleaded guilty to one count of first-degree course of sexual conduct against a child which is a class B violent felony. Sentencing is scheduled for Mar. 6.
A SUNY Oneonta political science student announces he’s running for the Oneonta Common Council. All Otsego reports Andrew Hamill is running as a member of his own party, “Unity for Oneonta.” Hamill says he hopes to bring accountability and pragmatism to the council, vowing to lead with a spirit of compromise.

The Baseball Hall of Fame 2023 Baseball Writers elect a single inductee. St. Louis Cardinals 3rd baseman Scott Rolen is added to the sport’s greatest roster. Rolen and Fred McGriff who is the Contemporary Baseball Players Era inductee will join the Hall on Sunday, July 23, in Cooperstown.
SUNY Oneonta’s Anthropology Department and the Anthropology Club are hosting an opening event on Feb. 8 for a new exhibit, “Unessays in Anthropology.” The exhibit features student projects from a variety of classes that are part of alternative assignments known as “unessays.”
