The home of Summit Volunteer Fire Department Chief Lynn Wayman was destroyed by a blaze earlier this month. According to the Daily Gazette Wayman attemped to extinguish the fire but retreated after it grew. Family and friends are collecting donations to help Wyman rebuild.
State University of New York Chancellor John B. King Jr. visited SUNY Oneonta last Thursday. King met with students, faculty, staff and community leaders and learn more about programs that support student success, research, economic growth, and diversity, equity and inclusion. He also toiured the Cooperstown Graduate Program in Museum Studies.
UHS Chenango Memorial Hospital is awarded over $20 million from the state to redesign its primary and specialty care services. The announcement comes as the hospital celebrates the first anniversary of its new Emergency Department and Walk-In center and puts the finishing touches on the first phase of its Chenango Medical Neighborhood Plan.
State Comptroiller Thomas DiNapoli’s office reports local sales tax collections increased by over 9% in January compared to the same month in 2022. Overall, local collections totaled $1.89 billion, up $159 million compared to the same time last year. The numbers are baseded on estimates by the state Department of Taxation and Finance
The Otsego County Sheriff’s Office is looking for tips to identify a man and a woman for questioning in a Town of Oneonta investigation. Photos are posted on the department’s Facebook page. If you have information on the identity of these individuals contact the Sheriff’s Office using the non-emergency number.
A Town of Oneonta domestic dispute leads to a man charged with felony criminal contempt. Police say the man violated an order of protection during the dispute by subjecting the victim to unwanted physical contact. He was booked into jail pending arraignment.
The Chenango SPCA has a new executive director. According to the Evening Sun Patrick McLaughlin succeeds Annette Clarke who is retiring. McLaughlin recently moved to the area after working at East Catholic High School in Manchester, Connecticut. He began his new job earlier this month.
State Troopers issued more than 11,800 tickets during a special STOP DWI traffic enforcement period over Super Bowl Weekend. Over 180 people were arrested for DWI. There were 490 crashes sttewide resulting in 73 injuries and four fatalities.Troopers also targeted drivers speeding and aggressive drivers.
A student was hit by a car Wednesday afternoon in the Village of Sidney. Police say the 14-year-old student was found on Sharon Street with a life threatening injury and was taken to SUNY Upstate University Hospital in critical condition. The driver is facing multiple charges.
More than 330 guests attended the Friends of Bassett Healthcare Network’s fifth annual Valentine’s Soirée at the Otesaga Resort & Hotel in Cooperstown last Saturday. The event raised over $250,000 in support of Bassett’s School-Based Health and Dental Program which has 21 centers across 17 districts.
