Oberacker & Maher Back School Meal Program

State Senator Peter Oberacker and Assemblyman Brian Maher are backing plans to create a permanent healthy school meals program in New York. The proposed program would provide breakfast and lunch to all children in public school districts, from pre-kindergarten to 12th grade. A federal meals program recently expired.

Cooperstown and Sharon Springs Get NY Forward Grants

The villages of Cooperstown and Sharon Springs receive awards from the NY Forward program. Cooperstown will receive $4.5 million, and Sharon Springs was awarded $2.25 million from the program supporting a more equitable downtown recovery for New York’s smaller and rural communities.

Cooperstown ZBA Holding Public Hearing

The Cooperstown Zoning Board of Appeals is holding a public hearing at 5 p.m. on March 7 on a request to allow short-term rentals at a Lake Street property. All Otsego reports the application seeks to permit the four upstairs bedrooms to be used for short-term rentals for less than 30 days.

SUNY Cobleskill Gets State Grant For Dairy Program

SUNY Cobleskill receives a $86,400 state grant for its Dairy Processing Bootcamp which proivides food processing workforce pre-employment safety and sanitation training in topics identified as critically important by dairy industry partners. Targeted recruitment will ensure that marginalized populations are provided a pathway into this industry.

Oberacker Named To Senate Anti-Semitism Working Group

State Senator Peter Oberacker announced he has been appointed to a special Anti-Semitism Working Group. The panel will hold roundtables throughout the state to hear from stakeholders and make recommendations on ways to best address the alarming rise in anti-Semitic incidents in New York.

One in Ten New York Households Suffer from Food Insecurity

State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli’s office released a report that found approximately one in ten households experienced food insecurity at some point between 2019 and 2021.The report raised concerns that food insecurity may grow as federal benefits lapse including the extra Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits which expired this week.

SUNY Oneonta & SCSD Partner For Teacher Pipeline Initiative

SUNY Oneonta and the Sidney Central School district partered to create a teacher pipeline as a way to address the increasing number of vacancies. The initiative started last fall and doubled in size from 22 students in the fall to 22 students on campus and 19 working off campus this spring.

DelCo Criminal Contempt Suspect Takes Plea Deal

The suspect in a Delaware County criminal contempt case takes a plea deal. Prosecutors say Brandin M. VanTassel of Walton pleaded guilty to ignoring a protection order and sending multiple text messages to the protected person. He will be sentenced to 6 months in jail and 5 years of probation.
