It’s about a week later but state lawmakers approved the 2022 state budget. The $212 billion spending plan allocates close to $30 billion for schools and nearly that much for investments in the green economy. It also includes funding to subsidize broadband internet for low-income families. More than $2 billion goes to workers unemployed due to COVID-19 but who are ineligible for state and federal benefits due to their immigration status. The state’s highest earners will see a surcharge added to their income tax.
