The state’s burn ban starts next Tuesday and runs until May 14 to help prevent the spread of wildfires. Residential brush burning is banned and according to state officials violators could be fined $500 for a first-time offense. The ban was enacted in 2009 and according to the Department of Environmental Conservation there’s been over 40% fewer wildfires since then. Campfires are still legal but officials say to be sure they are completely extinguished before leaving.
