Jeanet “Jan” Calhoun, MSN, RN, EMT, was honored last month as the Trauma Program Manager of Distinction for 2020 by the New York State Division of the American Trauma Society. Typically this award is given to managers of Level One or Level Two trauma centers in large city hospitals. In 2019, the Bassett Cooperstown Emergency department learned it could no longer qualify as a Level Two trauma center. It had six months to verify a Level Three status or risk losing certification altogether. Calhoun, without prior experience, Calhoun stepped in as interim trauma center manager and successfully turned the program around. Calhoun has dropped the interim label from her designation to become the permanent Trauma Center Manager at Bassett.
