Gunshot Ruptured Gas Line At House Explosion; Furnace Is Believed To Have Triggered The Blast

Finally, some details about what likely caused the massive house explosion on Richards Street in oneonta. Officials now say it was a gunshot that ruptured a gas line on December 9th. NYSEG had originally responded to a home a few doors down that morning – for the report of a strong natural gas odor. A few hours later, they responded again to a different house for the same complaint. A technician was beginning his investigation at the Moan home at 18 Richards Avenue when the explosion happened. The technician was not injured. It’s believed that the home’s furnace triggered on – igniting the strong natural gas fumes and causing the massive blast. 60 year old Desmond Moan was killed in the blast that leveled his home and caused severe damage to several other neighboring homes.
