Oneonta To Begin Charging Businesses For Abandoned Shopping Carts

The common council’s legislative committee has given approval to a proposed ordinance that would formalize Oneonta’s response to abandoned shopping carts. Code enforcement has been busy reviewing hundreds of city ordinances from around the country. The city says the issue needs to be addressed because it’s a burden on city resources. The new ordinance would require businesses to permanently identify their carts with metal tags or engravings. If business don’t pick up their carts, they’ll be charged 125 dollars per cart for the city to destroy them.
