Governor Andrew Cuomo declares a disaster emergency after a weekend of shootings that left 26 people dead across New York. According to the governor’s office this new strategy treats gun violence as a public health crisis, using short-term solutions to reduce the shooting rate and well as long-term solutions that focus on community-based intervention and prevention strategies to break the cycle of violence. That includes the creation of a new Office of Gun Violence Prevention.
