New York takes action to prevent debt collectors from garnishing COVID-19 stimulus payments. A new law protects payments under federal acts, including stimulus payments, tax refunds, rebates, and tax credits to support individuals and children qualified for or received prior to the effective date of May 13. It does exempt payments for child and spousal support from the prohibition in situations involving fraud. A notice of the new law is being sent to those who have a currently enforced money judgement.
