Seward Calls for Study Of Link Between Lyme & Mental Health

State Senator James Seward is joining with his Senate colleagues calling on New York to investigate the impact Lyme and tick-borne diseases may have on mental health. A bill sponsored by the Oneonta senator was unanimously passed this week. Seward says we know more today than ever before about these debilitating ailments and are making strides in prevention and treatment and studying Lyme in relation to mental health is a logical step forward that can lead to improved diagnosis and treatment plans that can improve patient outcomes in the short- and long-term.

Shayne O’Neill Senior Recital Saturday At SUNY Oneonta

SUNY Oneonta Senior Shayne O’Neill who’s the cellist in the group “Dear Cecilia” will be presenting a public recital Saturday in the college’s Fine Arts Building Room M201 beginning at 7:00 p.m. Come celebrate Dear Cecilia’s EP release entitled “Avalanche” and the culmination of Shayne’s undergraduate music education Shayne will perform original music with friends and a collaboration with Oneonta Computers and Circuitry Ensemble.

Cooperstown’s Annual “Easter In The Village” Is Saturday

Cooperstown’s Annual Easter in the Village event takes place Saturday at Pioneer Park. There will be sack races, and an Easter basket toss along with an egg and spoon race. You can pick your egg from the tree of eggs. The Tunnicliff Inn, adjacent to the park, will host Easter bingo, photos with Easter and Mrs. Bunny (so be sure to bring your camera) and will be serving refreshments. Lockheed Owego Gets $1.2 Billion National Contract

The Lockheed plant in Owego is the recipient of $1.2 billion in federal contract work for three aircraft programs funded in the budget passed by Congress last week. Nearly $450 million of that will go toward the construction of 23 choppers for the presidential helicopter program with $400 million going to produce helicopters for the Navy used in multiple roles including search and rescue along with surface warfare. The Lockheed Owego plant employs around 2,700.

Opportunities for Otsego Commemorates Victims of Crime

Next month the Violence Intervention Program (VIP) of Opportunities for Otsego is hosting several memorial exhibits to raise awareness of domestic violence and sexual assault in the community. All exhibits will be on display on Tuesday, April 10th at a reception held at Hartwick College, Anderson Center for the Arts from 5:30PM until 7:30PM. The reception is free and open to the public and will include light refreshments. Donations of linens, personal hygiene items, and toiletries for the Violence Intervention Program shelter are welcome.

NY Sets Record For Data Breaches

New York had a record number of data breaches in 2017 according to a new report from Attorney General Eric Schneiderman. Companies and other entities reported 1,583 data breaches to the AG’s office exposing the personal records of 9.2 million New Yorkers. Schneiderman announced that he would introduce legislation to require Facebook and other social media sites to notify his office and New York consumers when they learn that users’ personal data was obtained and misused in violation of the law or the platform’s terms of service.

NBT Bank Celebrates Financial Literacy Month In April

April is Financial Literacy Month and NBT Bank announced it’s teaming up with with local schools and organizations through the the bank’s Strive® Financial Literacy program. According to a national survey 69% of parents say they are very or extremely concerned with setting a good financial example for their kids. April was recognized nationally as Financial Literacy Month by the United States Senate in 2004 in an effort to raise public awareness of the importance of healthy personal financial habits.

Fenimore Art Museum Opens Saturday

The Fenimore Art Museum opens for the season on Saturday beginning at 10:00 a.m. World-renowned artists are featured throughout the year in a compelling mix of diverse exhibits including a significant show of early works by 19th-century painter Thomas Cole. Veterans Transportation Service Needs Volunteers

Volunteers are being sought for a new veterans transportation serivce that will operate in Chenango and Broome Counties. The service called “Vet There” is a partnership between Clear Path for Veterans Southern Tier and mobility management organization GetThere. It will take veterans to health-related appointments along with providing transporation for shopping, employment and other needs. Officials hope to get the service started in May.
