Oneonta Firefighter Needs Community Help

Mike Moore has been a firefighter/paramedic in the Oneonta fire Department for 14 years. This past December Mike had a series of mini strokes that required immediate emergency surgery. Since his surgery on the 15th, he has required intensive care and has been on a ventilator. A posting on the Oneonta Fire and Rescue Facebook page has outlined the struggle that Mike and his family is facing. A Go Fund Me page has been set up to help offset his hospitalization. SUNY Oneonta Virtual Planetarium Show Tonight

The SUNY Oneonta Planetarium will present a virtual planetarium show tonight from 7-8 p.m. The theme is “Signals in Space” and features four short presentations by the planetarium staff. The Voyager Golden Records, Where the V’grs are in the current night sky, alien representation in our modern culture and the recent collapse of the Arecibo radio telescope, will make for fascinating listening for astronomy buffs. Chenango Man Sentenced to Six Months

A Chenango County man will serve 6 months in prison for burglarizing the Eaton Post office last year. Jeremy Cook of Eaton admitted he broke into the post Office with the intent to steal money last August. He attempted to break into a safe and then fled without taking any money. He was also sentenced in Federal Court to 3 years probation after serving the 6 months prison term.

Members of Ilion FD Under Investigation

Two members of llion’s fire department are under investigation, after a complaint was filed by a former employee, according to Mayor Brian Lamica. The complaint alleges the department behaved in a way that could cause legal issues for the village. The investigation that started in the fall has led to changes in how the department is run. Three deputy chiefs are in charge of the department for now.

Candidates for Mayor of Onenonta Announce Intent to Run

With the incumbent Mayor of Oneonta announcing he will not run for next term, candidates are starting to step forward. Democrat Mark Drnek(Drenek) has announced and according to AllOtsego.com; yesterday Republicans Len Carson and Craig Gelbsman have said they will also being running in the upcoming election. If both Carson and Gelbsman run, that would ensure a Republican on the ballot.

Sidney CWA Local Members Approve Contract

Sidney Communication Workers of America, local 14164 Acco Brands held their Contract Vote for Acco Union members at the Union office in Sidney yesterday and approved of their latest contract proposal. Union officials said that 187 members approved of the contract while 49 were opposed.

Delaware County Police Plan Up for Comment

he Delaware County’s Sheriff’s Department has announced that the draft of the Delaware County Police Reform & Reinvention Collaborative Plan, is now available for public comment. A Public Hearing will be held Wednesday, March 10th, 2021, at 12:45pm. Citizens are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the plan, the link to which is on the Delaware County Sheriff’s Department Facebook page.

Busy Week for Local Fire Departments

Its been a busy week for the local fire service. An apartment fire in West Oneonta, and a structure fire in the city proper. With the apartment fire, Oneonta Fire and West Oneonta providing mutual aid. An engine from the Otego Fire Department responded to the scene for assistance. Laurens Fire/EMS provided coverage at the Oneonta station and handled several calls while on standby. The structure fire was attended by the Oneonta Fire Department, off duty members responding. An engine from West Oneonta and FAST teams from Worcester and Franklin Fire Departments also responded to the scene. Otego Fire and Laurens EMS provided standby coverage. The causes of both fires are currently under investigation by the department’s cause and origin team.
