Security Breaches Hit Record Levels In 2016

Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman says his office received reports of close to close to 1,300 reported data breaches in 2016.

Schneiderman says that is 60 percent increase over 2015 and sets a new record.

The breaches exposed the personal records of 1.6 million New Yorkers in 2016, representing a threefold increase over the prior year.

Most of the breached data consisted of social security numbers and financial account information.
