In Albany, minority legislators have demanded a fair share of opiate treatment funding. The money has shifted to white suburbs. An analyst from the Drug Policy Alliance says officials have ignored areas of color. Some have expressed anger that it has taken white communities feeling the effects to shift the addiction conversation from criminal activity to a public health issue.

New York state is investing $10 million into improvements at 20 airports around the state. The money will go to upgrades, expansions and other projects designed enhance the facilities, which are spread from Long Island to western New York. In announcing the grant awards, Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo said airports serve not only as gateways but as key economic centers throughout the state.

Charles Schumer wants FBI background checks for summer camp counselors.The state’s camps right now only look at New York offenses, but Schumer wants to open that up to nationwide sex offenders and criminal databases. He calls keeping children safe most important.The state has nearly 17,000 registered sex offenders.
